Backpacking Through Europe

The Challenge:
After a time period of four months I wanted to create a personalized Photo Book, of all the places that I went to when I was underway. Making it look cohesive and having a simple and similar layout was the plan with a full page picture for photos so they are able to stand out. I would add some illustrative designs in the mix to add to the design and brake up the otherwise photo heavy book. Plus it adds fun elements to personalize it even further.

The Approach:
First step was choosing the photos that would be displayed in the book. Choosing the right ones from a stack of 3254 photos was not very easy but in the end I had chosen the select photos that told a story but also showed the best sides of the places I had been. Next I created chapters for each place I went to and added cover photos for each of them. After those steps were done I created the layout and inserted the pictures, text, and Illustrations in a cohesive and fun way. I also chose three fonts that worked well with each other and added to the overall design. Great Victorian for the cover texts, then Fairway Script for quotes. With these two heavy design fonts, I chose Lato for a simple text script.

What I Did:
Primarily using InDesign, I created the layout, placed pictures and text, Photoshop for the illustrations placed within, and Lightroom to some touch-ups on the imagery.

The Cover

Trying to find two photos that stand out was a bit of a challenge but in the end I settled for a sunset view of the ocean with limited text to really emphasize the picture.

Chapter PageLayout

The Chapter Page layout was a relatively easy to design. It was a matter of choosing a photo that is suitable for a cover page and adding the text of the place where I am. Then on the other side adding photos that were in order of what I saw first with a text introducing the place and some of the things that I saw and experienced while in it.

Page Layout

The page layouts were a play around style where different layouts to show different sides to the book but to also make it more interesting and not to boring. There were five different layouts that I chose to do in some different iteration styles. The first one is a full page layout with four photos on a page each. The next is where there are three photos to a page with one photo taking up half of said page in either a horizontal or a vertical position. Then there is also the one page and two page layouts where there is a main photo placed on a page or two photos placed in a page. The special page is the one where I pulled three small photos on a page with different layouts that I add to the other half of the page.
